PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) - Thirty-foot-wide black wings drawn in chalk and charcoal outside a cafe in Michigan are part of a fundraising effort for a woman who wants to help build a school for adults in Nicaragua.
The wings were drawn Wednesday outside the Raven Cafe in Port Huron, the Times Herald of Port Huron reported (https://bwne.ws/1bSdPdC ). They’re expected to stay on the ground until the next big rain washes them away.
For now, people may pose for photos with them and in return, organizers are seeking a donation to help get Deidre Murch of Port Huron to Nicaragua, where she wants to build the free school. Someone from the cafe will take the photo, which from above can look as if the person being photographed has huge wings.
“Originally I got the idea to draw the wings because I am a big fan of the show ’Supernatural’,” said Jody Parmann, Raven Cafe co-owner and artist. “On the show when an angel dies black wings are burned into the ground behind them and they are huge and beautiful.”
Murch is pursuing a trip sponsored by Random Acts, a nonprofit that has hosted relief trips to Haiti and Nicaragua. Parmann said the perfect opportunity to draw the wings presented itself when Murch approached her about raising $5,000 for the trip.
“What people don’t realize is that education is not free in Nicaragua like it is here,” Parmann said
Random Acts was founded by “Supernatural” actor Misha Collins. There’s no set donation amount for the Port Huron fundraiser. Murch said an earlier trip to Haiti inspired her to seek a second volunteer trip.
