MONROE, Mich. (AP) - Organizers say a veterans recognition program held every Memorial Day weekend at Monroe County Community College will not take place this year.

Several of the event’s organizers, including the founder, have confirmed this year’s Tribute to the Fallen has been canceled. Larry Merkle tells the Monroe News (https://bit.ly/1cAxy20 ) that he’s visiting Arlington National Cemetery that weekend and no one was available to host the event.

Merkle says organizers and a local AMVETS post will try to hold the program next year.

Tribute to the Fallen pays homage to U.S. soldiers who fought or died in service from World War I to the War on Terror. It also includes a presentation of every local solider who has died since WWI.

Last year marked the program’s 10th anniversary.
