HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A bill is moving through the Connecticut General Assembly that would allow people with regular driver’s licenses to operate three-wheeled autocycles and register the vehicles with the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Autocycles currently are not defined in state law and therefore cannot be sold or registered in Connecticut.
An autocycle is controlled with a steering wheel and foot pedals, and can have partially or fully enclosed seats for occupants. Autocycles also have seat belts.
Sen. Carlo Leone of Stamford, vice chairman of the legislature’s Transportation Committee, says autocycles are different from three-wheeled motorcycles or trikes, which are driven with handlebars and require a special motorcycle driver’s license to operate.
The Senate on Thursday voted unanimously in favor of legislation, which now moves to the House of Representatives.
