NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara (zah-DAY’-noh CHA’-rah) will trade in a hockey stick for sails as a celebrity guest with the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team.

Chara will join the sailing team Saturday during an in-port race in Newport. The city is hosting the current stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race.

The 6-foot-9 Slovakian-born defenseman is the tallest player ever in the National Hockey League and will be the tallest sailor aboard sailing vessel Azzam. Chara says he’s looking forward to seeing Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing in action.

The team is one of seven that departed Oct. 11 from Alicante, Spain, on the four-ocean, 45,000-mile race that will conclude in June in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing is the current overall leader in the race.
