BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - A southeast Iowa man has been charged with murder, accused of killing his 22-day-old son last fall.
Officers arrested 22-year-old Randall Payne at his rural Burlington home on Wednesday evening. Des Moines County Sheriff Mike Johnstone says Payne is charged with first-degree murder and other felony crimes. Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could be contacted to comment on Payne’s behalf.
The Hawk Eye (https://bit.ly/1e2YLeI ) reports that the body of Carter Joseph Payne was found by emergency crews after they responded to his father’s 911 call on Nov. 9. Johnstone says the boy’s mother and 1-year-old sibling were not home at the time of the infant’s death.
The sheriff says investigators waited until all autopsy reports were completed before arresting Payne.
