CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Transit Authority is moving ahead with contingency plans to absorb the possible loss of $21 million in state subsidies that help pay for reduced fares and free rides to disabled passengers and some senior citizens.
Lawmakers in Springfield have yet to approve all of the spending cuts sought by Gov. Bruce Rauner to balance the budget. But the Chicago Tribune reports (https://trib.in/1HhnEjj ) that CTA Chief Financial Officer Ron DeNard told a board meeting Wednesday that the agency is not waiting to see what happens in the Legislature.
DeNard says the CTA is already factoring the cuts into its own budget.
Federal and state law requires the CTA to provide the free and reduced fares, which cost the agency more than $100 million a year in uncollected fares.
