SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) - About 100 county Children and Family Services workers in Scranton are making plans to strike.
The Scranton Times-Tribune reported Thursday (https://bit.ly/1HfXwm2) union members voted against 2 to 2.5 percent raises through 2016, and proposed a four-year deal with yearly raises between 3.5 and 4.5 percent.
The county dismissed that counter-proposal Tuesday.
Three hours before the strike was authorized, a county commissioner said he didn’t see enough room for employee raises. But union representatives say media outlets reported the county had an $8.4 million surplus from 2014.
County officials say the average salary of union members is over $36,000 and the department is already one of Lackawanna County’s five largest expenditures.
Department officials say about 20 nonunion staffers would continue to work, but that they’ll eventually need to hire temporary workers.
