LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - A Las Cruces couple face child abuse charges accusing them of repeatedly using cocaine in the presence of their two young children, who both tested positive for the drug.
Police said Thursday that a 2-year-old daughter and 9-month-old son of 23-year-old Santana Jaramillo and 21-year-old Deva Leshae Blunt were tested after detectives learned of cocaine use in the children’s presence.
State child-welfare officials took the children into custody. The children are now living with relatives.
Online court records do not list attorneys representing Jaramillo and Blunt in the child abuse case, and attorneys representing them in other pending cases did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the couple’s behalf.
