ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island school district has axed its auditors after it made $250,000 in overpayments to 44 teachers.
Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/1JflsrY ) the Rockville Centre school district has changed some of its policies regarding raises and has replaced its internal and external auditors for failing to pick up the error.
Superintendent William Johnson says the district has already recouped much of the money. Some teachers have paid it in a lump sum. Others have chosen to pay it back over a three-year period.
Investigators found the error arose from an incorrect interpretation of the teachers’ contract. Dozens of teachers received double the percentage increase they were supposed to get.
