BAILEYS HARBOR, Wis. (AP) - A wetlands area in northern Door County has a prestigious designation.

The Door Peninsula Coastal Wetlands and its 11,400 acres have been recognized as globally significant for protection under an international treaty. The Nature Conservancy applied for the designation under the Ramsar Convention.

WLUK-TV (https://bit.ly/1G9bhnW ) says the Door County wetlands joins The Everglades in Florida and 37 other sites in the U.S. that have received the recognition. In Wisconsin, the Horicon Marsh in Dodge County, the Kakagon and Bad River sloughs on the Chippewa reservation in Ashland County have also received the international designation.
