BEALS, Maine (AP) - Maine officials are holding a public hearing about the potential impacts of a dredging project on the fishing industry in Down East Maine.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is asking to dredge approximately 100,000 cubic yards of clay material from an 18.5-acre area within Beals Harbor. It also proposes a smaller maintenance dredging project in Pig Island Gut. The public hearing on the dredging is scheduled for Thursday at Beals Elementary School.
Officials say the project would start in October and be finished by the end of March 2016. Comments on the project are due to the state Department of Marine Resources by May 28. A private contractor would perform the dredging work.
