PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A former Pittsfield city councilor has been sentenced to two years’ probation for tipping off a drug dealer about a police raid.

The Berkshire Eagle (https://bit.ly/1H5g71E ) reports that Paul Capitanio was also ordered Wednesday to avoid drugs after pleading guilty to being an accessory after the fact in distribution of oxycodone and conspiracy to violate drug laws.

Prosecutors say Capitanio was purchasing up to 10 oxycodone tablets per day from a drug dealer in 2013 while on the council.

The dealer was caught on tape during a wiretap investigation telling another alleged dealer that a “councilman friend” had tipped him off about upcoming drug raids.

Capitanio’s lawyer says his client bought the painkillers because he already had a prescription for them to treat back pain.

A tearful Capitanio apologized in court.
