PLAINFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Eight-year-old Girl Scout Brownie troop member Taylor Timm was more preoccupied with the icing and sprinkles adhered to her fingertips than the cupcake she was supposed to be decorating during a Cupcake War competition.

“I love icing,” Taylor said while squeezing a mountain of yellow frosting onto a cupcake. “I don’t know what I’m making.”

Taylor was among the more than 120 Brownie, Junior and Cadette members of the Plainfield Girl Scouts Service Unit 715 who participated in a cupcake decorating event, held at the American Legion Marne Post 13 in Plainfield. By Lauren Leone-Cross. The (Joliet) Herald-News. SENT: 280 words, photos.

Scout members competed in three categories: Best Use of Material; Spring Flower; and Girl Scout/Merit Badge-themed. Callie’s Cuties - a nut-free bakery in Plainfield - supplied the 250 cupcakes, along with sprinkles and edible glitter.

Bakery Owner Laura Meehan said girls who won would receive a free, two-hour private cake decorating lesson at Callie’s Cuties. Meehan said she was excited to take part in such a big event.

Tina Haynes, a troop leader in Plainfield, said she came up with the idea to put on the event. She said she thought it would be a fun thing for the girls to participate in.

Junior troop member Madeleine Brunker, 11, decorated one of her cupcakes with red and orange sprinkles to make a campfire.

“I want to see some of my friends win,” Madeleine said. “I don’t really care to win. It’s just for fun.”

The judges included Plainfield Mayor Michael Collins and other Girl Scout troop leaders.

Some of the cupcakes were donated to the American Legion Marne Post 13, so guests could enjoy them during Bingo night on Thursday.
