FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Fayetteville State University has agreed to sell its 100,000-watt campus public radio station to WUNC Public Radio for $1.75 million.
The Fayetteville Observer (https://bit.ly/1ICJDjA ) reports the FSU board of trustees approved the sale by an 8-0 vote in a special meeting Wednesday morning. Five of the board members were absent.
FSU Chancellor James Anderson says the sale was long overdue and it is difficult to underwrite a private entity because the school cannot use state funds. Provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs Jon Young says state appropriations and traditional revenue has been reduced by 19 percent and faculty positions by 34 percent.
The radio station, WFSS, aired in 1977 and became a 100,000 watt station in 1983.
