SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Gov. Gary Herbert says he’s open to the idea of making medical marijuana legal in Utah.
The Republican governor said at his monthly televised news conference Thursday on KUED-TV that he wants to make sure science proves cannabis oil carries medical benefits for things such as seizures.
Saratoga Springs Republican Sen. Mark Madsen plans to introduce a bill again next session that would make medical marijuana legal in Utah. Senators narrowly voted down his measure last session that would have allowed patients with chronic and debilitating diseases to have edible marijuana products like candy and brownies with a doctor’s prescription.
Herbert’s comments dovetail on remarks he made at a February news conference when he said medical marijuana needs science behind it and must be distributed by real doctors, no “Dr. Feelgood.”
