WEBSTER, Texas (AP) - A Houston-area obstetrician who abandoned his swamped car and walked a half mile in floodwaters reached a hospital in time to deliver two healthy babies.

Dr. Bassem (BAS’-ehm) Maximos said Wednesday that it was a group effort.

KHOU-TV (https://bit.ly/1A2OGYW ) reports Maximos became stranded Tuesday during flooding in the Webster area.

Maximos says as soon as he opened the car door the water hit him in the face. He left his vehicle in the middle of the road and started walking.

He sloshed his way to Clear Lake Regional Medical Center. The water, at times, was waist deep as Maximos used his cellphone to speak with nurses monitoring the soon-to-be new moms.

The doctor arrived in time to deliver a girl to one mother, and a boy to another.
