NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Newport’s interim city manager has turned down an offer from the city council to keep the job.

The Newport Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/IX5CGL ) they city’s mayor says Joseph Nicholson told council members he would not stay on “for all the tea in China,” and plans to return to his work as an attorney and city solicitor.

Nicholson took the job on an interim basis after former City Manager Jane Howington resigned last July.

Mayor Jeanne-Marie Napolitano says 50 applicants have applied for the job. She says a consulting firm has suggested 12 finalists, but the council is still considering other applicants.

She says the council hopes to begin the interview process in June and hopes to appoint a new city manager in August.
