LOS ANGELES (AP) - Deputies have arrested an apparently armed man running near an East Los Angeles freeway that was closed for more than an hour during a search.

Sheriff’s officials say the man was pursued on surface streets shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday before he ran into lanes on Interstate 710 and then into a construction area.

Freeway traffic was stopped in both directions near State Route 60 for the investigation. Traffic backed up for miles.

City News Service says the man was initially sought as part of a vandalism investigation. He was reportedly seen running in the area with a handgun.

The California Highway Patrol says the lanes were reopened shortly after 9:30 a.m.
