SOMERVILLE, Mass. (AP) - A man police say kicked in the door of a Somerville day care center, grabbed a 1-year-old girl, claimed to be a terrorist and wrestled with several officers before he was subdued has been ordered to undergo a competency health evaluation.
Not guilty pleas to charges including kidnapping and assault and battery were entered on behalf of Sandro Corbelli at his arraignment Wednesday. He’s being held pending a court appearance scheduled for June 2.
Prosecutors say the 38-year-old Corbelli, who recently moved from Brazil to live with an uncle in Somerville, broke into the day care Tuesday morning, grabbed the child, said he was a terrorist, and demanded money. The girl was not harmed.
Corbelli’s lawyer said his client, who has a history of depression, may have had a “mental break.”
