DILLWYN, Va. (AP) - A man who was misidentified by a young Richmond woman in a 1986 abduction and attempted rape is free.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1EGA6SW ) reports Michael Kenneth McAlister was pardoned by Gov. Terry McAuliffe and released from Dillwyn Correctional Center Wednesday after serving 29 years.

McAlister was mistaken for convicted serial rapist Norman Bruce Derr, who is serving three life sentences. Derr recently confessed to the crime.

McAlister was released from prison on mandatory parole in 2004, but sent back two years later for failing to comply with the rules. He also had a pardon request rejected in 2003 by then-Gov. Mark R. Warner.
