BESSEMER, Pa. (AP) - Pennsylvania State Police say two people charged with killing a Detroit man found dead near a western Pennsylvania school have been arrested in Alabama.
Police say 24-year-old Ryan Avery and 33-year-old Melissa Aponte, both of New Castle, Pennsylvania, were arrested Wednesday in Birmingham, Alabama. Police say the two fled there shortly after 24-year-old Frederick Deangelo Swillings was found shot to death May 1 near Mohawk Elementary School in Bessemer.
Police initially charged Avery with obstructing their investigation by allegedly making misleading or untrue statements about a report that Swillings was seen getting into Avery’s parents’ car about 45 minutes before Swillings’ body was found.
Online court records don’t list attorneys for Avery or Aponte. They are awaiting extradition to Pennsylvania on conspiracy, kidnapping, robbery, aggravated assault and criminal homicide charges.
