SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) - Plans to build a $264 million pork processing plant in Sioux City also include the hiring of up to 1,100 people, officials announced Thursday.

Construction of the pork processing plant is slated to begin in late fall north of Sioux Gateway Airport, with an anticipated mid-2017 opening, officials with Triumph Foods and Seaboard Foods said. The project is said to be among the largest private investments in Sioux City history.

“This is a tremendous project that will greatly impact the growth of our region,” Mayor Bob Scott said at a news conference.

The city and state dedicated millions of dollars in tax and job training incentives to bring the plant to Iowa, the Sioux City Journal reported (https://bit.ly/1e3nOOQ ). The plan now needs the final approval of the City Council and the Iowa Economic Development Authority at meetings next week.

Triumph Foods has only one other processing plant in St. Joseph, Missouri, where millions of hogs are slaughtered and processed each year. The meat produced is then marketed by Seaboard Foods, which processes more than 5 million hogs each year. The two have joined on several ventures within the past year.

The new Sioux City plant will be built on a 250-acre site in the Bridgeport industrial area.
