HICKORY, N.C. (AP) - A Hickory neighborhood is dealing with an outbreak of hawks which are attacking residents while defending their nests.

WBTV-TV (https://bit.ly/1Jgakv9 ) reports hawks have been in the neighborhood each spring for the past four years. Residents say this year has been the worst and many people wear helmets to prevent themselves from being injured by the hawks’ talons.

Wildlife officials say there isn’t much they can do about the situation, as hawks are protected birds. It is illegal to shoot them.

Officials say when the young hawk chicks leave the nest, the adults will too.
