OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The executive director of the Oklahoma Republican Party has been asked to step down three years after pleading guilty to two misdemeanor offenses related to domestic abuse.

Party Chairman Randy Brogdon said Wednesday that he asked 31-year-old Thomas Clint Ryan to step down and instead become political director after party members expressed concern, The Oklahoman (https://bit.ly/1E76D3P ) reported.

Ryan received probation after pleading guilty in 2012 to domestic assault and battery in the presence of a minor child and interference with an emergency telephone call.

Republican state Sens. A.J. Griffin, Kim David and Stephanie Bice said Ryan shouldn’t be employed by the party. Griffin said that it’s hard for the organization to have credibility when people in their ranks have pleaded guilty to crimes of that nature.

Bice said Ryan should resign permanently for the good of the party.

“While we certainly believe in redemption and reconciliation, we also believe there are consequences to actions,” Bice said.

The newspaper left messages seeking comment from Ryan, which were not returned.
