SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Peoria is launching a mobile payment program for downtown, city-operated parking.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports (https://bit.ly/1EFHttB ) the program will start in about two weeks. City Council members have approved a contract with North Carolina-based Passport Parking to provide a 90-day trial.

Drivers will be able to pay for parking through the use of a credit card or PayPal a smartphone app. The system also can be used through computers and traditional phones.

Officials say it also will make it easier to see who isn’t paying to park.

Peoria officials intend to expand the program to the rest of paid, on-street city parking if it is successful.

City officials also plan to use data to figure out different rates for areas where street parking is in more demand.
