PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - House Democrats have chosen a new deputy majority whip.

Rep. Christopher Blazejewski (BLA’-zeh-JOO’-skee) was unanimously elected to the leadership role Wednesday.

The Providence Democrat was first elected to the Rhode Island House of Representatives in 2010. He serves on the House Judiciary Committee and the House Rules Committee. He has a degree from Harvard Law School and works for the law firm of Sherin and Lodgen.

Blazejewski was nominated by Rep. Stephen Casey from Woonsocket.

Former deputy majority whip Rep. Joe Almeida resigned from the position in February following his arrest for misappropriating campaign funds. Almeida pleaded no contest Tuesday and was sentenced to one year of probation. The 57-year-old Democrat and retired police officer will continue to represent District 12 in Providence.
