INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A school in Afghanistan founded by the father of a baby who received life-saving heart surgery in Indianapolis in 2005 but died upon returning to his homeland has closed because of unrest in the region.
Jim Graham of Brownsburg tells WTHR (https://bit.ly/1Fgm3In ) that the school started by Hakim Wardak has shut down because of Islamic State group and Taliban violence in the area.
Graham and his wife hosted Wardak and his son, Qudrat, during the boy’s hospital stay. The couple traveled to Afghanistan recently to visit Wardak and his family.
Wardak started the school in honor of his son. It offers opportunities for young girls who wouldn’t otherwise receive an education.
Graham says Wardak has had to flee the village after recent attacks.
