ST. LOUIS (AP) - An Archdiocese of St. Louis commission meant to address social justice issues is in place.
The 26 members of the fledgling Peace and Justice Commission were introduced Thursday by the panel’s director, Marie Kenyon.
Plans for the commission first were announced last August, less than two weeks after the police shooting death in nearby Ferguson of 18-year-old Michael Brown touched off often-violent demonstrations.
A St. Louis County grand jury and the U.S. Justice Department declined to charge the Ferguson officer, Darren Wilson, who shot Brown, who was black. But the Justice Department released a scathing report that cited racial bias and profiling in Ferguson policing and in a profit-driven municipal court system that frequently targeted black people.
The new commission will address issues including poverty, racial tension and education inequities.
