ST. LOUIS (AP) - A 30-year-old suburban St. Louis woman has been ordered to spend five years in prison after tearfully apologizing for fatally hitting a pedestrian with her pickup truck while she was intoxicated.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1AZpFcz) reports that 30-year-old Heather Reid of Hazelwood was sentenced Thursday in St. Louis County.

She pleaded guilty in March to one count of involuntary manslaughter related to the August 2013 death of 73-year-old retired school teacher Frederick Lyles.

Authorities say Lyles was walking in University City when Reid’s vehicle swerved off the road and hit him. Lyles later died at a hospital.

Lyles’ son, Frederick Lyles Jr., called Reid’s five-year prison sentence “a cheap price for life.”
