PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Six school districts in Rhode Island have received one-day waivers to the minimum 180-day school year law because of all the snow that fell over the winter.
The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1d2HWR3 ) that Cranston, East Providence, Middletown, Pawtucket, Providence and South Kingstown have all received waivers.
State Education Commissioner Deborah Gist says she reluctantly recommended the waivers to keep the districts from having to extend the school year into the week of June 29.
Providence schools had seven snow days last winter. The city district plans to reduce February vacation next year by three days in order to accommodate snow days.
The state Department of Education says it will review school length regulations because they have not been revised in 15 years.
