MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama’s attorney general is warning consumers of a scam involving suspects pretending to be law enforcement and demanding payments for missed jury duty and unpaid debts.

Attorney General Luther Strange said in a statement that the scam is similar to others that have been reported throughout the state this year.

Strange says the scammers tell victims they can resolve matters by purchasing pre-paid gift cards and paying fines over the phone. Strange says the scammer uses a caller ID manipulation technique called “spoofing” so caller IDs say attorney general’s office when they call.

Strange says his office typically contacts people by mail, not over the phone.
