SALEM TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities are seeking information from the public after a bald eagle was found fatally shot in Washtenaw County.
The Ann Arbor News reports (https://bit.ly/1E8U08y ) the bird was found in a rural area on April 3 in Salem Township, northeast of Ann Arbor.
The dead eagle was reported by a resident to the state Department of Natural Resources’ poaching hotline.
Conservation officers say the bird had been dead for some time and was showing signs of decomposition. A necropsy later determined it had been shot.
Bald eagles are protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Killing an eagle can lead to prison time and fines.
