CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Urban League President Andrea Zopp says she intends to run for Republican U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk’s seat. The move potentially sets up a 2016 primary battle for Democratic Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth.

In a Friday statement, Zopp says she’s assembling a campaign team and will make a formal announcement soon.

Zopp is better known in Chicago than statewide. She was appointed to the Chicago Board of Education by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and is finishing a term which saw some tumult, including a recently-disclosed federal investigation into no-bid contracts.

Zopp’s corporate resume includes vice president and general counsel positions at Exelon and Sears Holdings.

Duckworth announced her senate run in March. The two-term congresswoman has been a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs secretary and Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs director.
