HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Sen. Chris Murphy and Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut are proposing federal legislation aimed at making college more affordable.
The bill, unveiled Friday at the Legislative Office Building in Hartford, would tie federal funding for colleges to their ability to meet certain affordability and student outcomes goals. The lawmakers contend not enough colleges have implemented new ideas to cut costs.
Under the legislation proposed by the two Democrats, colleges would be required to keep tuition under control and award degrees that lead to jobs for graduates, in order to keep receiving federal money. Schools would also be encouraged to reduce the time it takes to complete a degree, helping students to graduate faster with less debt.
Himes said he often hears from constituents about their fears of paying for college.
