LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - Lake Charles police say crime increased 2.6 percent in 2014.
In a report released Thursday, the American Press reports (https://bit.ly/1eOXZNb ) police investigated 10,619 offenses, including felonies and misdemeanors, compared with 10,353 in 2013. Crimes against people were up 4.6 percent while property crimes fell 0.9 percent. Other crimes were up 7.7 percent.
There were five murders in the city in 2014, compared with six in 2013, and 36 rapes in both years. Robbery fell 11 percent, while assault and battery rose 8 percent. There was a 6 percent increase in auto theft, but a 1 percent decrease in burglaries and a 2 percent drop in larceny.
Overall, calls for service were up 3.2 percent, to 121,384, in 2014, compared with 117,676 in 2013.
