SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Legislation that Democrats say would freeze the amount of property taxes collected won support on the Illinois House floor.
But Republicans called Friday’s measure a “sham” that doesn’t go as far as the reforms suggested by GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner.
It’s one of a series of votes House Democrats are making on Rauner’s proposals because the governor hasn’t introduced his own measures and Democrats want to put the GOP on the spot.
The proposal would require voter approval for local governments to collect more tax revenue than the year before.
The vote was 37 “yes” and 23 “no,” with many Republicans among 38 “present” tallies. Several Democrats voted no.
The vote was on an amendment to a bill, so it is not final.
