HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) - Alabama state troopers say a man accused of hitting a trooper during a traffic stop was later taken into custody and hospitalized.

Department spokesman Curtis Summerville says a 38-year-old man was stopped for speeding on a freeway in Huntsville and hit the trooper before he pulled away Friday. Summerville says the trooper shot at the man as he fled the scene.

Authorities say police later found the man at his home and he was taken to Huntsville Hospital. Authorities say the man was suffering from injuries to his head and face. It’s unclear if charges have been filed against him.

The man’s father told local media that his son has schizophrenia and Asperger’s syndrome, and may have fled the trooper out of fear.

Summerville says the trooper wasn’t injured.
