PROVO, Utah (AP) - A 19-year-old Toquerville man accused of killing his neighbor has been found incompetent to stand trial and will be sent to the Utah State Hospital to undergo treatment to restore competency.

Joshua David Canfield was determined to be incompetent Thursday to proceed with his 5th District Court case.

Canfield has been charged with murder and aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies. He is also charged with armed robbery and several counts of theft. The charges came after the 2014 death of his 58-year-old neighbor, Geraldine Bommarito.

Canfield reportedly tried to cut his throat after being arrested and appeared in a booking photo wearing a neck brace.

The judge’s order will include a provision that the hospital should move Canfield ahead of other court referrals awaiting help.
