GREELEY, Colo. (AP) - The man watching a 2-year-old Greeley boy who died after falling unconscious this week has been charged with first-degree murder.

Prosecutors also filed a felony child abuse charge Thursday against 33-year-old John Melvin White, who is accused of not getting medical help for Michael Lara quickly enough.

The Greeley Tribune (https://bit.ly/1ELcqxv ) reports that White, the boyfriend of the boy’s mother, told police that Michael fell off the porch of his home and hit his head after the family’s pit bull bumped into him Monday. According to court documents, he said he tried to revive the boy by slapping and shaking him and splashing him with water and also changed his diaper before going to a neighbor for help.

White’s lawyer didn’t return a call seeking comment.
