BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A Slaughter man who went on a shooting rampage at Grady Crawford Construction Co. in 2009, several months after the Baton Rouge firm fired him, has pleaded guilty to killing two workers and wounding a third.

The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1bUACFs) Richard Matthews’ guilty pleas came three months after state District Judge Tony Marabella ruled the 58-year-old is intellectually disabled, which prevented East Baton Rouge Parish prosecutors from continuing to seek the death penalty in the case.

Marabella on Friday sentenced Matthews to life in prison for taking the lives of 55-year-old Cheryl L. Dixon Boykin, of Denham Springs, and 44-year-old Diana Lynn Tullier, of Walker, on Dec. 23, 2009.

He was scheduled to stand trial July 20.

He wounded a female dispatcher before fatally shooting Boykin and Tullier.
