JACKSBORO, Tenn. (AP) - The mayor of Campbell County, Tennessee, wants to temporarily shut down an animal shelter there after a persistent outbreak of parvo killed several dogs, including three litters of puppies in recent months.
Multiple news outlets report Mayor E.L. Morton said Monday he plans to ask officials for clearance to close the shelter for two weeks for a sweeping cleanup. He also plans to appoint a new animal shelter director. Morton is nominating Mez Bruce for the position.
In March, shelter staff was forced to put down 12 dogs with parvo only to see the virus reappear. The shelter also lost three litters of puppies due to the illness.
If officials approve the plan, the shelter will conduct a cleanup and a controlled burn around the facility to suppress viruses and bacteria.
