NEW YORK (AP) - Nassau County police say a garbage truck driver was killed after the truck rolled away from him while he was collecting trash.

Fifty-five-year-old Rudolph Skakel was working in Roslyn, N.Y. Friday morning when he got out of his Mack truck to retrieve garbage containers. Police say he noticed the truck rolling down the street and he ran after it, jumping onto a side step on the passenger side in an attempt to gain control of the vehicle.

But the truck sideswiped a utility pole and Skakel was killed, according to Nassau county police. Authorities say he worked for Basin Haulage.
