CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Federal officials are investigating a discrimination complaint about admissions policies at two magnet schools in the Charleston County School District.
The Post and Courier (https://bit.ly/1L5OWrm ) reports officials with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights are meeting with Charleston school administrators about Academic Magnet High School and the Charleston County School of the Arts. Local civil rights activist Rev. Nelson Rivers III filed a complaint last fall.
Academic Magnet High School has 610 students enrolled, with 12 percent minorities and 15 black students. The School of the Arts has 1,120 students enrolled, with about 25 percent of the students minority and 167 black students.
Students are accepted for admission based on a score on a 15-point scale, which includes teacher recommendations, academic performance and standardized test scores.
