ELYRIA, Ohio (AP) - An Ohio judge won’t serve time in prison after he was found guilty of tampering with records and other charges for not disclosing his ownership interest in an office building where several lawyers have legal practices.

Former Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Burge was instead ordered Thursday to pay $3,000 in fines for his crimes.

The 68-year-old Democrat was found guilty last month of tampering with records and falsification. He resigned a week later.

Burge called the sentence handed down by visiting Judge Dale Crawford “charitable.”

Burge took the bench in 2007 after years as a defense attorney. He mostly represented himself at trial, and said he will consider appealing his conviction.
