GOODLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities have charged a Lapeer County man with animal torture after his retriever was found with an arrow in the top of her head.

The Flint Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1PoiqGV ) Friday that a warrant has been issued against the man but he hasn’t been arraigned on the charge. The dog named Gemma was found in March in North Branch by a construction worker.

The arrow was lodged above her left eye and barely missed the dog’s brain and optic nerve. It was later removed by a veterinarian.

Gemma’s owner told investigators he shot the dog with a crossbow after she behaved aggressively toward a second dog he owned at his Goodland Township home, north of Detroit.

The man faces up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine if convicted.
