CHELSEA, Mich. (AP) - A groundbreaking is planned this weekend for a mountain bike trail system in Washtenaw County.

The Michigan Mountain Biking Association holds events Saturday, starting with a 5-mile bike caravan from the Clocktower Commons parking lot in Chelsea to the groundbreaking ceremony at Waterloo State Recreation Area’s Eddy Discovery Center.

Organizers say plans call for a five-loop mountain bike trail system with about 25 miles of new trails.

Fundraising and sponsorship development are taking place for the project that’s being spearheaded by The Potawatomi Mountain Bike Association. Organizers hope to raise $500,000 in support. Corridor clearing on the first two trails began earlier this month.
