MONROE, La. (AP) - A 26-year-old Monroe man has pleaded not guilty to the first-degree murder of 85-year-old Shirley Cagle, the long-time assistant director of the Ouachita Council on Aging.

Robert Nelson was indicted on the charge April 30 by a Ouachita Parish grand jury. Cagle was killed in her Monroe home on April 23.

Nelson entered his plea on Thursday.

Assistant District Attorney Neal Johnson tells The News-Star (https://tnsne.ws/1bUiA6d) prosecutors haven’t decided whether to seek the death penalty, which is an option under the first-degree murder charge.

Nelson is being represented by Monroe criminal defense attorney LaValle Salomon.
