SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - San Jose is moving forward with plans to outfit its police force with body cameras after reaching agreement with the police union about policies governing their use.
The San Jose Mercury News reports (https://bayareane.ws/1EKQSjy) that the agreement announced on Thursday focuses on privacy rights for officers, victims, witnesses and bystanders.
Among its major pieces is a ban on recording free-speech demonstrations and private settings such as hospitals and medical offices.
Mayor Sam Liccardo wants to outfit officers with the cameras by June 2016. The city is seeking grant funding to cover the estimated $1 million cost, though the mayor has said the cameras will be funded even if grant funding is not found.
The police department is now expected to test three devices among a small group of officers.
