INEZ, Ky. (AP) - A man has been electrocuted in Martin County after police say he and a cousin were trying to steal metal brackets and copper wire from an idled coal mine.

Multiple media outlets report 45-year-old Charlie Jude was killed after climbing a substation and touching a 70,000-volt live wire.

Martin County Sheriff John Kirk says the victim’s cousin, 27-year-old Steven Jude, ran to get help, but it was too late.

Steven Jude told police he and his cousin thought there was no power on at the mine near Inez.

Kirk says Steven Jude has been arrested on charges of criminal mischief, possession of burglary tools and trespassing.
