EDDYVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky State Police have identified the trooper involved in a shooting in western Kentucky.

State police say Senior Trooper Eric C. Fields fired an agency-issued firearm at 51-year-old John C. Smith of Eddyville on Saturday after Smith displayed a weapon and laser pointing device toward troopers. No police were injured.

Police said Thursday that Smith is in stable condition in a Paducah hospital.

Fields is a seven-year veteran with state police. He was assisting with the execution of a search warrant in Eddyville when the shooting happened.

Fields remains on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

Smith and another person in the home were charged with drug-related offenses.

Police said detectives recovered 30 guns from the residence and more than $14,000 in cash. The investigation is continuing.
